Fuss is over money because it can buy anything

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 11 December 2013 05:34 (A review of Black Cat, White Cat)

It was a weird comedy, one of those rare kind. You won't like it from its very beginning. It took me for nearly 30 minutes to understand the characters and storyline. After that it was non stop adventurous fun ride especially wedding ceremony scenes were extremely amusing. Each character was funny and very unique which made the movie very special. I liked the total scenario, I mean the culture and all as in a movie which generated laughs in us.

It was a beautiful romance tale with a backdrop of gangster theme. Actually there were two gangsters in the story, where a father and a son and his love lady are stuck and struggle in between them. When a new business fails, the father is in the position with one option left to solve where his son must take the hand of the sister of money lender. In other hand the son is in love with another girl. The money lender's sister is also forced to do so yet to find her perfect man. When all these characters meet at once in the wedding ceremony, the twist and turn in the story occur and who are all getting benefit of it is the remaining.

It is unbelievable that I almost gave a high rating to this movie. You know I was not in favour of it when I began to watch after the so average opening sequences. While progressing the story it emerged as a finest comedy, in fact one of the finest comedy ever produced. For every scene after a scene it began to surprise me in every possible way. It was only moving harder and deeper reaching the core of the audience's laughing sense to tickle. I might be overwhelmed, it may not bring LOL at you because it was a dark humourous flick so definitely it will bring a large smile on your face throughout.

There was a fat pig often showed in the movie which was eating some old car's skin. I don't know what it's for and where it fits in the story but it was very much enjoyable for the moment. Like that there were many huge humourous scenes it had. Musics and dances were another advantage of the movie. For the last 90 minutes I almost forgot myself. I have been among those characters and enjoyed every second of my stay. I can highly recommend it to you but I don't know whether it is your kind stuff. Certainly I assure majority of you would love the movie and you may consider one of your all time favourite comedy ever.

The Flesh Giants vs. The Iron Giants

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 8 December 2013 08:55 (A review of Pacific Rim)

I had many reasons to watch it, one, I was a huge fan of 'Godzilla' movie, saw it when I was a kid and being speechless for many days. Two, Guillermo Del Toro. Three, I always eager to watch a good visual effect movie on big screen, so I am graphic geek.

The story follows when giant monsters known as Kaiju rises from beneath the Pacific ocean, the war between human and them commences. Initially millions of humans lose their lives in the series of Kaiju attacks. To fight those monsters humans creates monsters like giant robots called Jaegers. This makes the war between them fair enough to compete each others and balanced until the monsters started to gain the fighting power back from the humans. So the years pass the apocalypse nears, the humans need to stand and fight one final time to defend the Earth and what happen next were the grand finale.

I feel deja vu now, wait, I have seen before these giant robots somewhere before. It took more than a moment to figure it out. In my childhood I saw them in the television cartoon show, Duckstales but I don't know what they are called. Those were kinda similar to these giants.

When 'Transformers' and 'Godzilla' comes together it forms 'Pacific Rim'. A $220 million movie which made lots of buzz on movie goers, including me. Wondered what was he (Guillermo Del Toro) planing all this year since 'The Golden Army' which released a half decade ago. The more gap between the movies, the expectation grows higher and I was just curious to see this movie than thinking how it could be. Even I had set countdown in my phone for this day (12-07-2013) since last 60 days. Finally the day came, as a movie freak I wanted to see it in IMAX, since there is no IMAX around me I had no choice but go for regular silver screen digital 3D version.

Does it worth seeing in digital 3D? is the million dollar question from the people who are looking forward to see this movie. I say definitely worth it, what is the use to see an advanced technique and a CGI graphic movie in the regular version. Movies like these are meant to see in digital 3D because it is not some comedy or sentimental drama but a huge action pact movie. Don't expect pop-ups, that's for amateurs who are new to experience the 3D illusions. It was shot in regular 2D then converted to digital 3D so it was better but not so awesome.

The movie had not serious big names in the cast. There is no one particularly to say who done great work but they all performed their best. The Japanese girl Rinko Kikuchi was kinda cute, as the movie was inspired from Japanese monster tales she added the Japanese flavour to the movie. Ron Perlman was good, expected little more screen space for him. Charlie Hunnman and Idris Elba, they both were okay especially Charlie Day has been so nice just like he was in 'Horrible Bosses'. Looks like he's a new sensation in comedy World, hope a great future ahead of him.

Geographically speaking I am happy that this whole movie won't take place in the United States itself after all it was theirs movie. Hollywood has a Worldwide fan base so when they make movie from outside the regular geographical stream the audience from the rest of the World will always welcome it.

It was not the best movie nor the worst that I have seen in this monsoon. For a $220 million movie the graphics were so awesome, the action and stunts were breathtaking but by far the story was so weak especially the character developments. Whenever you see Kaiju and Jaeger on the screen it will be the thrilling experiences but other than that the development happening around the human characters were little boring I mean it was emotionless. When it compared to 'Godzilla', 'Godzilla' was well balanced between them two while in 'Pacific Rim' it was one sided and that is all about graphic, actions and 3D. These modern movie techniques carried the whole movie with their shoulder and made to look better. I can say these special effects were the highlight of the movie.

Like my synopsis say it was decent till the end then confuses with few common logic. If you just ignore it, the movie will give you the best entertainment that you have paid for. If you are looking for a good story, twist and characters then it is not the right choice, this movie was totally an action packed with awesome graphics. This movie will more suitable for younger audiences.

Surprisingly gud, beter than few other alien movis

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 8 December 2013 08:54 (A review of The Host)

A movie which is adapted from a novel wrote by 'Twilight' series fame Stephenie Meyer and directed by one of a promising sci-fi movie maker, Andrew Niccol. Everyone knows how famous the 'Twilight' series was, so like everyone else I had my expectation of this movie. It did not disappoint me, I actually liked everything about it. I thought the theme was good but the development between characters and story was excellent. That means I can't say it was a genuine but somehow very clever than Common mans smartness in thinking.

Most of the people are always expecting great adventures, breathtaking stunts and smart graphics when it comes to an alien invention theme movie. So I guess that's why this movie did not impacted among them. It was an alien invention movie which suits the family audience as well little kids who can understand the cinema.

The story of a teenage girl, Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), attempt to kill herself when enemies try to capture her alive but she fails. In her inquiry she tries hard to protect her dear ones. Once she breaks out from there the adventures begins to hunt her down, blah blah blah....... I love to say everything about the story but I don't want to spoil your own experience with the movie before a watch. So just rent it and decide yourself whether you liked or not.

In my personal opinion this movie was so good and better than 'Twilight' series. People liked 'Twilight' series because of Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson-Taylor Lautner combo, especially the chemistry between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson was really a good. This movie's story was far better than all the four Twilight movies. Actually I compared it because the same writer who wrote it both, other than that it won't fair in comparison. I really give you thumbs up with a smile to go for it.

Half baked but stil looks better on emotional side

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 8 December 2013 08:51 (A review of Til Death Do Us Part)

Usually I love to watch Cantonese movies, I mean the Hong Kong movies, I have seen many, just love most them in those I have seen. And I occasionally try Chinese (Mandarin) too so saw this movie which earlier made me so curious because of its title 'Til death do us part'. The title was sentimentally appealing like most of Korean romance-drama does so thought to give it a try would be worth.

As I expected something, this movie gave me totally different experience. While listening to the words and dialogues I thought I was understanding it without subtitle, I went very close to the characters, just like living in the movie with them. The reason is I like emotional drama even the story or movie are not that good enough.

This story happens in the early 90s of a Chinese remote village which located in a mountain region. Where the HIV/AIDS hit persons are all together kept away from the village. Just like a village with two ethics, both of them live their own lifestyle within the border created by themselves and restricted to contact or have the relationship between these two groups even they are related by blood.

The plot looks really nice but the movie was bit slogging especially on initial parts then performance by the cast took the movie to the heights. Later half was very nice in fact very emotional. In my opinion tearjerkers would love to have it. I was not convinced for the ending part, the content they used for it was basically not true in the real World. But in a movie anything can possible, everything is up to the audience to decide whether they enjoy it as considering it an entertainer or complain like an they are expert. You can't just ignore the whole movie for the few flaws so giving it a try is really a good idea. That means it's not negligible nor a must see, for me it was like a half baked but I feel they could have made it better.

ELYSIUM was one of the years best sci-fi

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 7 December 2013 11:53 (A review of Elysium)

The movie is from the director of 'District 9' which sets in the year 2154 about the people of severely damaged earth and luxurious artificial habitat in the space. I could say this movie was not much distinct from Tom Cruise' recent science fiction. Both the movie deals about ruined earth and wealthier space station colony. More like it is a prequel to 'Oblivion' where robots are taking over from the human race. I enjoyed both, they were the finest science fiction of the year. 'Oblivion' was unique but 'Elysium' gives the same feeling to the movie 'District 9' where protagonist from both the movies get infected and suffers severely.

Max (Matt Damon) is an orphan young man who is dreaming to escape the polluted earth and settle down in the luxurious place in the space called Elysium. He works in a factory where security robots are manufactured. One day something goes wrong with him while working, he begins to get sick. In order to get cured he must immediately visit the Elysium where poors from the earth are not allowed. He knows he can't enter legally so he must find an alternate way where he could reach his target.

2013 was one of the best year in last the ten years for science fiction movie fans. I thoroughly enjoyed many movies along with my favourite of the year 'Gravity'. 'Elysium' is better than the average, I don't know why it was rated such low. But I could not get a few things like why should one install electronic chips and devices into his body to steal the classified data. I thought the pen drive or external HDD are more than enough. Whatever, this movie looked good to me and expecting you to enjoy it as well.

So Uwe Boll can make a better movie

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 7 December 2013 11:49 (A review of Bailout: The Age of Greed)

I could not believe it was made by the director who is famous for his crap movies. When he had the most popular names in his kit, he gave nonsense movie 'In the Name of King'. For me 'Rampage' was his best movie though it was only okay type. I thought he could never make a better movie than that but surprised me and everybody with this. Yeah I liked it very much, the movie with not much famous actors in it which is almost a B movie. The 'Prison Break' actor gave the brilliant performance. The character like his are quite famous nowadays like one from the 'Death Race' who loses everything and go after for who did it.

Jim is a lower middle class family lives with his beloved wife Rosie. Rosie is a sick and need to be treated every day. The income won't pay for their required costly medicines but theirs invest in the stock market do. They are happy until the market begins to crash which forces them to lose everything they had. Now Jim is clueless about his future, as an ex military man he takes the law in hand to avenge his loss. How he does and who are all his victims are the remaining.

I presumed it would be a drama like 'Wall Street' duology but I am glad it was different. There are some flaws in the story, like his targets for revenge were so stupid. You can't just pick everybody to avenge for your downfall. The end shootout scene was so silly. Shooting everyone including innocents who come across is brainless who call himself 'the fighter' for poor people. As a movie it is entertaining, but if you compare it to reality it is so stupid. All the above leaving hint to return in a sequel was really not a cool. This movie is purely for an entertainment and don't overlook more than that.

A journey of Linda Boreman to Linda Lovelace

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 7 December 2013 11:45 (A review of Lovelace)

It is a biographical drama of the number one adult movie star of the 70s, Linda Lovelace. The movie unfolds her life story that happened between the age 20 to 32. It briefs her struggle in the married life till her first appearance on the silver screen in a movie called 'Deep Throat'. I could have liked more if the movie would have the original cast Kate Hudson and James Franco as planned instead Amanda Seyfried. Nonetheless, it is a cool movie about a true story. To me what's important is the message to reach everybody than the technical and cast issues.

Linda is from a decent respected family who is attracted to Chuck, a guy she meets in a pub. Instantly they decide to get marry against her parents will. After the marriage, she is not permitted to interfere into her husbands business, in fact she does not know anything about it. Once Chuck gets into a severe trouble in his business the couple loose everything they had. So then he decides to put Linda into an audition for a movie in the lead role. Everything goes as planned, in one movie and it's success they begin to reclaim their position in life. Now as a popular celebrity in the country, what Linda decides about her future is the rest of the story.

Amanda Seyfried was excellent as Linda Lovelace, she exceeded all my expectation and so the Peter Sarsgard. In the initial parts I almost started to dislike the movie because I thought it was travelling in one direction which I was not happy about. In half way the movie begins to explain in different perspective of the same story and that is where it almost convinces the audience. Still a few things need proper explanation especially her relationship with Marchiano. I believe they are not planning for a sequel to brief her second marriage and rest of the life till she dies. The movie had few nudes but no sexual interactions. It describes more on the emotional side than her professional stuffs. In the end this is about a real person's good and bad where we can learn something from their mistakes. Overall, it is a one time watchable biopic.

Good man, bad woman and one hell adventure

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 7 December 2013 11:36 (A review of Identity Thief)

Little fun adventurous popcorn movie. It was an average movie, Melissa
MacCarthy was really good and without her it would have been unworthy
to see or mention. Jason Bateman was only a good man of the story but
Melissa controlled the movie who is actually a thief. Her impressive
acting from the movie 'The Heat' is still fresh in my eyes which made
this movie a bit curious.

Sandy is a married and hard working man but he's struggling to pay to
lead a normal life from his earnings. He did not realize someone is
behind it who stole his identity and spending his money till he was
arrested. When the law gives thumbs down and so his company, he takes
all the risk of his own and go a trip to find the thief. Like a bounty
hunter he finds his man who is actually a lady. To bring her back to
his town, that is where the real problem lies when some strange people
are on their trail for their quest.

From the Director Seth Gordon of recent blockbuster 'Horrible Bosses'
fame. He retained Jason Bateman for this comedy flick but like I said
Melissa MacCarthy steals the show. The fun was not even close like what
the 'Horrible Bosses' though somehow enjoyable. It's supposed to be a
pure fun filled movie but in the second half they began to turn it over
to character sentimental. Sometimes the emotions are very dry which had
no depth of feelings. It won't convince the audience to have a fondness
for characters but well tried. Call it an a simple time pass movie.

6/10

When your family believes you, who would you trust

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2013 11:48 (A review of Lore)

From the Australian director whose second venture is this which is an official entry for American Academy Awards from the country. It was based on the book 'The Dark Room' which is inspired by the real event. A story told from the Germans perspective about young brothers and sisters who were strayed during the devastated Germany by the war. In such condition these youngsters avoid the roads and curfew cities and all the above finding a way to survive. Food and shelter are their main concern. It had little disturbing violence and sex scenes. There's a lot in the movie to understand about the human affection while hating somebody from the eye of a teen.

The story follows just after the Nazi Germany was defeated in the second world war where the country was divided into 4 parts. In one of the divisions from the south-west which belong to the Americans is where this story takes place. A 14 year old Lore leads her family with younger siblings to their grandmother's house after their Nazi parents were captured by the invaders. In their 900km journey they must travel by foot before catching a train to the destined place. They meet a mysterious young Jewish, Thomas, who thought to be a threat to them. This young siblings must put all their trust on him in order to their journey to be safer. And the remaining story tells whether their ultimate goal is achieved or not.

This movie was similar to the 2003 French movie 'Strayed' where the character Thomas is almost resembles one from that movie. But this movie is only slightly ahead of that movie in all the perspective from better story and all. The performance of the actress who played the Lore was outstanding. When I first saw the movie poster I believed she was Evangeline Lilly of 'Lost' fame. It is a very well made movie and the screenplay was the highlight. Deserve the appreciation from the critics circuit and movie fans.

Story of a 12 year old who lead & feeds his family

Posted : 10 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2013 11:46 (A review of A Time for Drunken Horses)

Notably this movie won many awards in the film festivals around the globe. Hard to say it is the director's debuntante product. A tale about the young siblings leading their hard lives where there is no one to look after. The family without the elders guidance trying to fit in the tough society. Theirs earning depending on the illegal business where child labouring is so common, especially in their village. At the early age these kids are behaving equally to the adults like a fully developed mentality. The fight for the normal life in the surround of harsh mother nature where it covered with snows. Kinda rare to see a story that takes place in this part of the earth because most of us believed middle east is a hot desert region.

'A Time for Drunken Horses' tells the story of an Iranian Kurdish family who live in the village next to Iraq border. Their lives running on the smuggling business by their father. Once he dies 12 year old Ayoub is forced to take over his father's position in order to feed the family. The family is yet to recover from their recent loss but situation worsens when the doctor says their handicapped brother needs an immediate operation. Auoub begins to work hard to earn enough toman but in the end he falls short and then his sister come to help. How this struggling family without the parents and with a inexperienced leader leads to the right direction is the rest of the story.

The director Ghobadi used the non professional child actors in this 80 minute short tale. Where he succeeds to deliver the surreal drama of his country's domestic problems faced by the poor families. The title represents the horses that used for the smuggling. In some part of the story where they feed alcohol for the horses and especially in the end scene it was unbearable to see animal cruelty. It looked surreal and made uncomfortable to watch. On the other side the young boy's battle for his brother's life was endurable. In the end the movie will easily win your heart.
