(A review of
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent)
The third installment of 'Berserk: The Golden Age Arc' movie series which was based on the manga series. As expected the movie didn't disappoint me but still first two are the epic compared to it. Yes first two were war genre, fully gore, awesome movies and this third one was slightly turned out fantasy-horror. After where it ended in second part I thought the revenge will commence in its follow-up story but it surprised me and took us on the different path.
This story follows after a year since Guts and Griffith parted. Some of the escaped Hawk bands prepare for the rescue mission in the Casca's stand-in command to bring back their leader. Soon, Guts join them, the rescue team becomes much stronger. Not wasting much time the mission commence and what comes next is the unexpected twist and theme transformation. The dark world unleashes, without a mercy it assault the heroes and leaves the unforgettable scars. The best part of all these three movies were the way the movie ended. It leaves something broad open which makes us to guess what will happen next like a mind twister.
Yeah I know most of the people like Guts and it is my favourite character as well. In this part The Griffith character was weakened but we knew it coming. As he was a mysterious character from the very first movie especially with his 'golden egg' I knew there must be some story behind it. This movie did not explain that portions very well, maybe we can expect that in the next part, I hope so. And Casca was as usual supported very well.
The sex scenes were stronger like in 'The Battle for Doldrey', so the movie is not suitable for everyone. Those who like sword-war theme and Anime especially gore will enjoy it. If you have not seen first two, begin with those, you will love this trilogy for sure. Now I am eagerly waiting for its fourth. Highly recommended for adults.
8.5/10

(A review of
Side Effects)
A fine thriller, I thought I knew the twist before it reveal but I failed though it was a simple one. They utilised concept very well, about the side effects of the pills. In most of the scenes some logics were missing, still people have somehow knowledge about how it all works. But you know in movies, a doctor can do lawyer works, a lawyer can do engineering work and an engineer can do the doctor work. All are fair and square.
Wow, Rooney Mara looked so cute in the movie, is it only me or for everybody as well!. There's not much to praise Channing Tatum. The usual, fine performance by Jude Law but Catherine Zeta-Jones' character surprisingly took the story towards her side in the 2nd half of the movie. Yes the second half was much better than the first due to puzzling the characters, the falling and rising of the characters.
The movie had a sufficient suspense to hold the audience to keep interested. Like most of the mystery theme, the twist breaks out at great timing and in a style. It was not a masterpiece but will be one of those well made crime-thriller with backdrop of medical related. A watch will be good enough.

(A review of
Before Midnight)
I liked it but not as much first two. Both the main characters chose awesome topics to talk in all the 3 movies between that about themselves as well. I was curious like everybody else about the story where it ended in the second part. Without a proper confirmation whether it was a happy ending or a sad like as usual. So this movie states that from very beginning itself without holding anything behind.
It was a rare trilogy, I even did not know the third movie was in production, all the sudden it is now in digital copy. There are lots of fine elements in the movie to like it, One of those were dialogues. I mean what they talk, about life and others stuffs. The presentation was a bit different than earlier two. The smartest thing they did was adding half a dozen of extra characters to the story in the appropriate timespan. I thought was surprisingly good but for some people it did nor work. The nude scene was unnecessary, for glamour? I don't think so. I thought the movie should have kept open for all age groups like first two.
I think this movie series will go on and on for next 30-40 years till both of them dead. If it happens then it will be awesome, probably I'll be old when fourth sees a light. Hope you enjoyed it as much I did or see it if you have not seen yet.

(A review of
The Frozen Ground)
This movie was based on the Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen played by John Cusack. The story sets in the 80s where a young prostitute, Cindy, played by Vanessa Hudgens is one of the victim but who was narrowly escaped from being killed. Then the Nicolas Cage enters as a cop who chases this serial killer. It feels like deja vu right, yes it is the story well known to everybody, most of the serial killer themes were alike. Unfortunately this story was inspired from a real incident.
This movie is definitely worth seeing but not a box office hit. And also a typical Hollywood story presentation spoilt it. In other side it lacks in intellectual cat-mouse chase between good and bad which were very essential for a movie to make a big commercial success. For this kinda story in Korea, they make breathtaking way with lots of violence and gore which sometimes looks very real. Other than that it was a quite good movie crafted by a debutant director.

(A review of
One Day )
I saw it second time. Thank god it looked better and I like it more than earlier. Maybe because this particular movie might require to be seen twice.
Well, the movie was a romantic-drama with backdrop of time leap theme. The layers may confuse us, so it requires a serious attention while a watch, sometime re-watch might help for some people to understand it properly. I was not liked 'Inception' that much, for me it was a usual Hollywood action movie with layers in it. But this movie was mind blowing, portrayed like an art. The pace was slow, those who used to it will not find any difficulty but for others, patience must required.
It was all about the blooming love between two young people, Singing and Tsung, who is having the same dream on the same day but a year gap to each. Yeah, just like the movie 'The Lake House'. What does the dream mean and do in their real lives is the movie and its rest of the portion. Sometime it was a tough call or to guess between the real and the illusion of the story's plot. Still I felt they should have tried something different ending. The existing one was very ordinary but thought it's better than making a very commercial. Some dialogues were very cool and romantic. The movie shot on the right season, every place showed on the screen were so calm and beautiful.
I have seen very few good Taiwanese movies and it was one of the best in those. There's no much difference comparing it to a Chinese or a Hong Kong movie, after all they are all Mandarin or Cantonese. Yes I think it is underrated but not a must see movie. It is a rare and quality movie, I know some people would love it as much I did and I believe that might be you.

(A review of
Treeless Mountain)
It was about two Korean kids which follows after their mother leave them in theirs aunt's house to fix her relationship with her husband. Their mother gives a piggy-bank and tells them will be back before it get full. So the mission begins to these kids fill the piggy-bank. But very soon everything turns upside down when their mother and aunt turn it down to take care. And what happens to their future is the remaining story.
It was a very close theme to 'Children of Invention' and 'Mommo'. Our heart really suffers to see the kids struggle to survive the world. In one minute they had everything in life like all the normal kids then in the next minute they unwanted to their dear ones. To see from the kids' perspective it was truly hurtful but the girls respond very well to the situations and for each others stays strong together.
There was a scene where kids involve in some cruel incident. Due to cultural difference (especially foods) it might make a bit uncomfortable with the sensitive audience. I mean I was saying about grasshoppers in the movie.
The direction was exceptional, the movie looked original and realistic. Both the kids were cute and did an awesome job. This is easily one of a best children's movie as well Korean.

(A review of
Hitchcock)
Yes like they say it was biography but not from beginning to the end of Alfred Hitchcock life. It tells only certain part that involves him. To make it clear it was a behind story of making of a epic movie 'Psycho'. Mainly it concentrated how much he struggled during that time which include relationship trouble he had in his marriage as well threats to make the movie.
Anthony Hopkins was brilliant, I don't know how Alfred Hitchcock really look like except the black & white pictures in net but he did a awesome job. A fine support from Helen Mirren and others including beautiful Scarlett Johansson in a cute hairstyle. To compare todays thriller-horror with those days movies, really they struggled a lot to put their product into the market especially fetching a approval certificate from the censor board.
Like I said you will be disappointed if you expecting to see Alfred Hitchcock's whole life journey. The story revolves only around the making of the masterpiece 'Psycho'. Worth a watch to know a bit of 'master of suspense'.

(A review of
Gangster Squad)
With a great cast the story was equally powerful, like the movie 'Public Enemy'. Sean Penn and Josh Brolin are the men of the movie, which is all about them and their clash. Ryan Gosling and other gangmens supported well, as expected Emma Stone was just a big name in the cast but not the role she played. Only opening few minutes, it was slow and later parts were very pacy and racy. Some shots were very stylish, men with guns like the movie 'Dick Tracy'. The costume designer and set designers brought the real atmosphere of 50 of Los Angeles including some fine graphics in parts. Well directed by the 'Zombieland' director and this movie should be his best till so far. You know movies always looks fine when the story had men with a gang who are in mission or seek a revenge or robbing banks etc. Definitely entertains us, at least most of them so this movie as well.
The story follows after the second world war in LA, when a most powerful gangster, Mickey, wants all the western territory into his control but a cop stand against his will. The cop form a little gang to fight against his illegal activities, so the small fight turns a war between these two men. And who win and who lose is the end of the movie.
I was not expecting, in fact I was not interested but my friend insisted so saw it. I liked it a lot and I also blamed myself not watching it till now. It was based on a novel and I don't know how much it justified for its book but it is a must see movie that belong to gangster theme. I think it is a little bit underrated everywhere.

(A review of
When Harry Tries to Marry)
This was a hybrid movie, a very rare kind, more like a cultural crash where east meets west. The movie was all about a young Indian student Harish alias Harry who lives in the United States. When his parents' love marriage broke Harry decides to get marry arranged by his parents and relative like Indian culture. It is a long process, while everything going right direction an American girl fall for him from the very beginning which tumbles his heart. He tries his best to not to fall back to her and what happen next is the rest of the story.
The movie was colourful. Music was very good and some tunes were catchy. All in all it was completely a fun movie and sad that many people won't get it. You no need to familiar with both the cultures to understand. The movie was a fun debate between 'love marriage' and 'arranged marriage'. And what wins at the end is to know you should see the movie.
Everyone looked awesome in their own way. I thought another Keira Knightley (debuted in 'Bend it like Beckham') is on making after seeing a character played by Theresa. Harry was good like a typical Indian character and so his parents and uncle as well cute Nita. A simple entertainment about cross-culture, good to be watched at once.

(A review of
Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog)
A Japanese drama based on a true life story of a guide dog called Quill, a Labrador. Since dog won't tell a tale the whole story was told from a boy's perspective who was appearing on the screen for a very few minutes. It was just a formality to make the story reality and nothing more. This boy meets Quill somewhere midway of the dog's life and disappear forever. But in Quill's case it begins with his birth till his death so he's the hero of this movie and no one else.
A cute Labrador born with a dark mark in his side abdomen, a few weeks later the owner pick him to train as a guide dog. So the first partition to the puppy from his mother. He was sent to a couple's house to keep him till he becomes a young adult. So then the second partition which slightly hurts inside our heart. Then he becomes the one of a best guide dog and soon after he becomes someone's, a blind man's eye, a guide dog like he was trained. The rest of the story tells how he devotes his work and himself to his master.
There's no other better way to teach our kids about life than giving a puppy as a gift. They will learn how to take care an another soul, playing with them, fighting with them, chasing with them and all the above separation, facing the death of someone you love the most. I said this because I had one too and I learned many stuffs in life how to face it. So this movie is what intent to show us. Transforming from a cute puppy to an adult, faithful guide dog in a decade makes us to feel of seen a man's whole life as a dog.
This story was not intended to break the viewer's heart. So there's no strong animal and man bonding in this story like other dog movies had. They wanted to show us what's really happening in the real world and how a dog faces his hurdles throughout his life journey including the people he meet. But remember what I am saying, you won't control yourself, the more you try to hide your tears the more you will wet your eyes. Especially during last 20-15 minutes it was emotional, if you ever had a dog you will know the situation very well. It was the best dog movie (only by few margin) compared to 'Hachiko', 'Red Dog', 'Marley & Me' etc because those movies tells the tales of the dog and their relationship with the humans and mostly from a man's perspective. Those were entertainer masterpieces but this one was more like a some documentary movie. A must watch movie, I guess kids would love to see Quill.
