Ridiculously hilarious and totally enjoyable

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 21 September 2013 06:41 (A review of This Is the End)

This movie came as a surprise package, totally enjoyable, ridiculously hilarious and I thoroughly entertained. It stars all the new gen rising stars especially the actors from comedy stream. Seth Rogen, Jay, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and many others are just awesome. But I thought Channing Tatum's cameo was a bit foolish and others come for couple of frames. Could you believe it Seth Rogen directed this movie, well he did a hell of a job in the first movie.

Pretty acceptable graphics for a fantasy movie, but sometimes it was dirty and sexual. The story centers around the Hollywood celebrities who meet at a party thrown by James Franco and soon after everything turns hell when the beginning of the end roll out. A bunch of celebrities trapped in a house preparing for the apocalypse and doing everything they could to protect each others.

The filmmaker superbly used the theme songs and movie songs especially the Backstreet Boys' song during the end of the movie for a dance like 'Slumdog Millionaire'. So far it was one of a fine comedy of the year which was based on the short video. Loved it, hope you will do same as well. Recommended.

227 days of Pi's life drifting on the blue desert

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 15 September 2013 02:58 (A review of Life of Pi (2012))

Well, one of most expected movie of 2012 by me. It was not a colorful visual movie like 'Avatar' which was bluish Or 'Hugo' which was orangish except in few scenes that too come in night shot though IMO you should not compare it with above two. Many part of 3D sequences were just awesome, never ever looked better the water in 3D.

It could have been more violent and sentimental story that ever told on this theme but not, the director cleverly blended the humor with character emotions very nicely, that is why it was just rated PG where children are allowed with their parents approval, but it is common for them to see an animal to kill another in Animal Planet, so its not a big deal i think. The CGI animal(s) were looked so clean and good. Of course the Tiger dominants throughout the movie beside Pi.

I must say the movie don't offer what you expect from its trailer, in movie it was totally different than any movie in the world except Waterworld + Cast Away + Castle in the Sky (a little) = Life Of Pi, i am not comparing it to other 3 but saying got similarity in some parts.

I did not like the end much, I mean the way it ended was not proper, I thought it still had something to go far away then realized it happen only in commercial movies.

My question is can this movie do good business which got no big names and cast!? Indian cast, Taiwan's talent, American product and a great effort of various technicians from around the world is equal to LIFE OF PI in Pacific ocean over 227 days. Hoping it gonna grab couple of awards in Academy award. Worth watching it in 3D, Someday in future you can say that i was in there when it came out when it called epic like what we call some of classical movies today.

You could see better and beautiful India in beginning few Minutes than any Hollywood movie which deal on Indian subject. people from in and around Pondicherry can feel proud, why not whole Indians can. The images from the movie will remain in our eyes for some time even after you left the cinema hall specially may be you won't forget the name Richard Parker.

And now i go for 9 outa 10 saying must see specially we Indian because we cant make movie like this at least for right now in our own but we can watch this western piece of Indian art carved Ang Lee.

There is a chance that this movie could replace 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' as Ang Lee's best, I said may be so lets see. Might be I am little excited for seeing it in preview show lets see what happens later days and what others say.

The return of the epic to all the epics

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 15 September 2013 02:53 (A review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)

First I like to start with that I am one hell 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy fan freak, it is EPIC to all the EPICS in human history of filmdom. I voted many movies for 10 outa 10 but by far LOTR stays in highest peak point on that list. I never compare HOBBIT to LOTR because the time and technology differentiate both the movie (trilogy) and I request you all not to do that. Another solid reason is that I saw LOTR as plain live action graphic movie but saw HOBBIT a decade later in 3D with advance CGI techniques in it.

Now lets talk about 'An Unexpected Journey', The first installment of 'The Hobbit' trilogy which tells the untold adventurous story of Bilbo Baggins, the ring holder, which take place 60 years early to the actual LOTR, it also tells how Bilbo Baggins ends with the precious Ring in his pocket that everyone in the Middle Earth was looking for it over the centuries. As usual stunning visuals, Peter Jackson did hell great job by handing the massive characters/cast/role and also got what he wanted from CGI technicians, It was not gigantic cast like LOTR trilogy though. In fact I have seen only 33.333...% of the movie so far I mean I yet to see other two parts (66.666...%) which make it a trilogy so my rating for this movie is temporary till next two years.

The movie begins with slow dramatic style, introducing all the characters one after one otherwise some could get mix up to identify all the dwarfs who look alike. And then little fun get pass through middle of the movie with small-small adventures then begins second half where most of the real adventures take place which kick starts with mountain Trolls. Extraordinary 3D effects with few great pop-ups, some action sequences were simply breathtaking especially one in underground Goblin city is treat for eyes specially if you see it in digital 3D, expected ultra slow motion images Like what we see in cricket, sadly I did not get chance to see the movie in 48fps, that really scuks as being LOTR fan. Great to see 500 years old freaky, an aggressive Gollum in 3D, you gonna witness the best Gollum in technically, Andy Serkis did great job in his short phase.

There is a brief scene where this movie meets 'Fellowship of the Ring' when Gollum lose his Ring in a dark cave and that situation was bit stranger in this movie and different than what we saw in LOTR may be because it was brief like i said before. Meet between them, Bilbo Baggins and Gollum was more like funny simultaneously frighting too, specially kids may feel the scare.

Background score was so great throughout the movie like previous trilogy, even some songs too. When movie ended I left cinema hall like everyone else but felt I still wanted another hour of it, I was forced to leave the place :( How many of you will agree with me, it started slowly but ended strongly, that's why all this drama of me.

In world cinema, there will be always some characters which will remain in people's mind forever, like the Joker, Jack Sparrow, Dark Vader etc, like that Gandalf is for LOTR, of course including Gollum, Ian McKellen was so awesome in all the four movies, without him or replace of him is like a bowl of curd rice without a Piece of pickle.

Overall an excellent standard movie, must see in big screen with digital 3D specially if you are a film freak you should not miss it. Some people might have not get satisfied with movie but all I can say is still another two is yet to come so it will make difference at least then. Now all we can do is wait.....

A girl who feared to take chances but did it

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 15 September 2013 02:50 (A review of 3096 Tage)

The movie based on the true story of Austrian woman Natascha Kampusch. At the age of ten she was abducted by an unemployed young man called Wolfgang Priklopil and kept her in a secret cellar for the 8 long years. Warning, this movie is not suitable for everyone because the movie had many disturbing, nude scenes. It was harsh true but raw for a movie and I am happy they made this.

It's easy to find the errors on the technical aspect and the flaws of the movie but when you think of it from the girl's perspective it is totally shocking and long incident that everyone never dreamt about. So there's no point in pointing the mistakes because you are not watching it for an entertainingt but to know the bitter truth, right? Natascha Kampusch was a normal young Austrian girl, she did not try any heroic endeavoring during her captivity but her bravery attempt at the end of the movie made her free from the slavery. As you see the title you will come to know almost everything about the movie even the end twist as well not complicated as one you think but when you watch the movie it tells the way it really happened.

As a kidnapper, Wolfgang Priklopil was a smarter and sharper enough. He read the girl's character and behaviour perfectly, he tried to give her freedom within the border he marked and also tortured her to make believe she's in his command. But his overconfident led him to the disaster from his perspective. In the end, good always wins over evil.

Antonia Campbell-Hughes was excellent as Natascha Kampusch and so the little version of her. I heard that she lost lots of weight for the role, I guess it's her best performance till now from those I have seen.

Remember you won't watch it for enjoy the moment, it was those movies like 'Trade' and 'Garden of the Night' that will remind you about the real pervert co-existed in our society. As per me it is a must see movie but you should keep it in your mind like I said it was a little disturbing for its adult contents.

A 10 years-old kid and her careless parents

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 15 September 2013 02:49 (A review of My Queen Karo)

The movie was partially based on the director's own story. Which took place when she was a young girl in the early 70s who lived in Amsterdam hippie community with her parents and others under one roof. It tells about her experience she witnessed in her childhood where she was free to share everything and from everyone.

As a child to a father whose life was dedicated to the hippie community and to a mother who was passionate about her career in fashion designing Karo was left alone which creates an arrogant behaviour within her. Karo's mother battles for saving her husband and marriage while her father's concern about another thing. The different field of interest in her parents, their relationship begins to tear apart which affect her the most.

From the 10 years old Karo's perspective, she sees everything that every child is forbidden to see. Adults are making free love especially her father Raven with a fellow activist Alice in the presence of her and her mother. That confuses her in human relationship and behaviour so instantly Karo fall in love with her stepbrother and when he was taken away she feels the pain in her heart. That leads her to make aware of her parent's failure to take care her. The little girl who played Karo was very good in handling her role in those particular scenes.

The nudism in the movie was quite strong but it won't feel like some porn movie, it all counts on the way you take it on. The movie's moral was on the environmental circumstances like this what could a child can become or made by seeing the adult's behaviour. This movie was not a bad at all, it was directed very well by the director Dorothee and told everything she saw in her child's eye.

Corruption, scandals, poverty and a mistake.

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 15 September 2013 02:44 (A review of Graceland)

It was a Filipino captivity thriller-drama. A story of a driver father who risks everything to save his beloved daughter from the kidnapper. Well his daughter's kidnap is a mistake, the kidnappers wrongly abduct the driver's daughter instead the girl he works for. The story begins with his boss, a corrupted minister having sex with a minor girl. The lower middle class families are the one affected by this most powerful and rich minister. So the plot was very clear about its kidnapping theme which involves political corruption and scandals.

Any parents can feel the heat for this father who roams in the streets like a strayed dog. The story was hyped enough to create tension and confuse over the viewers to see a struggling father to get his daughter home safely. He was an ordinary father, definitely not like Liam Neesan from the movie 'Taken'. A police officer lands to him for a help, knowing that corruption is everywhere the desires to work alone. In other side, it get started to unfold the story of a driver's ill wife which turns him from a witness to a suspect to the law's eye.

The movie looked kinda real, like a documentary or something about under aged child kidnapping and forced into prostitution. The director really did a fine research about it to nail this movie. There was a scene it was totally disturbing to catch a minor girl in the act. I don't know is it permitted to make one like that, for me I felt it was totally unnecessary. It divides the audience into two specially the family audience. The twist was great, that made the movie's value reach a little bit higher. 'Trade' was a movie about human trafficking that happened in northern America while 'Taken' in Europe and 'Graceland' is not too far from those two which take place in south-east Asia. Overall it was a movie will leave you the unbearable images even after a watch.

About a father who stood there for his son

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 13 September 2013 04:00 (A review of Haridas)

A movie that every father must see. The story of 'Haridas' carries an important message that inspires everyone. Actually the character Haridas was an autistic which was loosely based on the Korean movie 'Marathon'.

The movie's protagonist Kishore as Sivadas plays a tough police officer, an encounter specialist. When he receives a news that his mother is passed away he had no choice but take his autistic son Haridas with him. He is the only family left and the rest of the story is how this tough police officer offers a better future for his innocent son.

The opening was kinda some thriller then when the character Haridas was introduced the story flips to the dramatic side. The boy who played Hari (Prithviraj Das) as an autistic was performed better, but the story was told from the father's perspective. As a father of a special child, his affection towards him while struggle to provide his needs are really heartbreaking. In other side his unaccomplished mission starts to give him a pressure, threatens his spare time that he spends for his son.

There are many jokes in the movie to keep the audience face brighter. The comedian Soori gives his best shot alongside few from the protagonist itself. Many dialogues too contains very interesting lines, mostly the facts about people wrongly believed especially what the doctor says about disability children.

The movie had small-small flaws which are hard to notice when you are already merged with the story and the characters. This was an unexpected but awesome movie made by the director who given average movies like 'Ninaithale Inikkum' and 'Yuvan Yuvathi'. Children movies are quite rare in Kollywood, we can say 1-2 movies per years. It looks like two alpha wolves meet at a crossroad that I felt after seeing this movie and 'Dhoni'. You may wonder what that mean, 'Dhoni' was a Prakash Raj's movie which tells about his son who aspires to become a cricketer like Dhoni. While Kishore is a new, promising and raising artiste who played played a father of an autistic-son in this movie. Both these guys are from the same regional state who are famous for their negative roles in the movies.

This movie is a must see movie, anyone can understand it easily because the father-son relationship is a universal thing, hope you won't miss it.

When the time comes, sometime the role will swap.

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 11 September 2013 04:06 (A review of A Simple Life)

A fine family drama, there was no over emotions but a simple story and I loved it to the core. I love kids movies as well old people character movies, my heart will melt when I see them struggle. I am really very happy to saw this rare Hong Kong movie and I am glad I picked particularly this.

Andy Lau, vastly known name if anyone familiar with the Hong Kong movies. Many his movies are my favourites and goes this movie as well to that list. This movie is about the two normal people's relationships, an old maid and his young master. It was quite different, when maid turns too old left no strength to serve his owner what comes to her rescue is to repay for her long and faithful service she did. Like I said the movie get rid of the sappy melodrama and portrayed like that happening in a real environment.

This movie does not have any twist and was very plain. The story development was steady and gives away the audience to where it is heading so if you are a smart enough you will get it before you finish watching it. This is the movie, the characters it had that make us to judge what we have done in our whole life, someday when we become old. This movie deserves an ovation and all the credits goes to the writers and the director. A must see movie.

A drama beyond my expectation

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 11 September 2013 04:05 (A review of The Place Beyond the Pines)

Wow what a movie, I completely surprised. The character appearances and presentations were like Alfie's movie style. Just remember 'Psycho' where the movie begins with one female character and slowly transforms it into another male psycho character. There were no psychos in this movie, it was pure dramatised for the time being the characters constantly gives the screen space to another and new character. Thus, the new story begins with the new character, more like the layers within.

The movie opens with Ryan Gosling-Eva Mendes combo and transforms to Bradley Cooper-Rose Byrne and then again to two young boys. In their limited time span both Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper gives one of the best performances ever, the young and hot Hollywood property at present. Cine lover will find it like the clash of the titans. Rose Byrne does not get much but Eva Mendes delivers much better performance. However this movie should not be missed, looks like we should watch out for this director's future projects.

This kinda movies are not suitable for the sequels and prequels but desperately I want one and I know I won't get it. A must see movie and I highly recommend it to everyone though be aware of the movie pace.

Danny did it again, he's not an ordinary filmmaker

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 11 September 2013 04:03 (A review of Trance)

First, anybody who liked this movie may get hurt of my review because I was very little disappointed with the movie. The movie's opening was great and so the end twist but the real problem was the middle portion. It was too draggy drama, nothing but tried to stretch the movie's length.

The performances were good, all the main three guys were excellent in their respective roles. The hypnotherapy they used in the movie was too much for the plot like I felt it was all about hypnosis and it did not look real to me. In another angle, this movie looked like the fusion or borrowed ideas from 'Inception' and 'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind'. The movie had many positive sides too, Rosario Dawson's mysterious character and layers in the story.

Don't mistake me, I just expressed what I felt of it, for me it was a fine quality movie that lacked originality except the hypnotherapy that made little difference to the movie. Still a good movie to see once and appreciate the my old Danny for giving a variety of genre movie every time. Remember I simply liked it but not excited way.

7/10
